The Rules

"'When Draco points his wand at you, you do this'. He raised his own wand, attempted a complicated sort of wiggling action, and dropped it. Snape smirked as Lockhart quickly picked it up, saying, 'Whoops - my wand is a little overexcited -'" Moments later, "the end of his wand exploded"...
- Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Supplies:
  1. A few people.
  2. To start this thing off right: Book 1
  3. A large quantity of beer. (We use 'Little Chinos' [16oz Miller HighLife])
The Rules

To be clear, we are dealing with the books here, not the movies.
You by no means have to follow all of the following rules. But if this is your first time playing the game, you will have the most fun if you stick to them closely.
  1. Set a timer for 10 min and Select a reader. This reader will read, uninterrupted, for 10min.*
Drink whenever:
  1. An adverb is used to end a sentence.
  2. Hermione is a 'know-it-all' (reader's discretion).
  3. When words or phrases appear in italics to add excessive emphasis.
  4. Internal organs spontaneously rearrange themselves.
  5. The reading or mention of parchments or newspapers.
  6. Ron screws something up.
  7. 'He-who-must-not-be-named' is named.
  8. Classic Neville (i.e. when he is pitiful).
  9. Harry is angsty.
  10. Whenever the reader takes a drink, the readership takes a drink.
My group has come up with a number of rules that I've not shared. I suggest that as you play, you and your group attempt to create a number of personal rules, as well. Also, you should try to come up with some rule (a trump of sorts) that each reader can 'play' once and only once during her turn. When this happens... have a waterfall.

*We punish interruptions by taking the violator's beer away for the remainder of the 10min period.

Enjoy.

The game gets better and better over time. So many new rules and rituals are invented as you get used to her writing style and learn what to look for. It's great!
